The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was at it again yesterday in Mzimba showering insults at opposition parties, calling them garbage and spent forces that are busy making empty noise.
Ironically, while other senior party officials demeaned opposition party leaders, President Peter Mutharika, who is also leader of DPP, said the North will one day produce a president.
From regional governor (North) Kenneth Sanga, to vice-president (North) Goodall Gondwe and secretary general Griezeder Jeffrey, opposition parties were belittled in all spheres.
Speaking when Mutharika launched Mzimba Urban Integrated Water and Sanitation Project at the boma, Sanga likened the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) and Khumbo Kachali’s newly formed Freedom Party to some ants that make a lot of noise but have a thin skin.
He laughed off assertions from Aford leadership that it wants to revamp the party, saying Aford is dead and Mutharika must not worry about it.
“We have a certain ant, nyenje that makes a lot of noise during summer, but it has a very thin skin. You have people in Aford that say they want to revamp the party, and then you have Freedom Party, they are all garbage, they are just making noise like nyenje.
Gondwe, on his part, said there was no time for small parties, arguing, those starting these parties only want to enrich themselves.
On her part, Jeffrey said there was no way the DPP would leave government, especially because it won the last election from the opposition side.
She called former president Joyce Banda a mother without love, arguing she left the country in problems to enjoy life abroad, and does not think of Malawians at home.
Jeffrey also attacked Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera, saying he ran away from God’s work as a pastor, and, therefore, God would not grant him an opportunity to rule Malawi.
But Mutharika, who despite accusing MCP of failing to develop the North for 31 years, avoided politics of name calling.
He said his administration has given many important positions to people in the North, that include Attorney General, Commissioner of Prisons, Chief Justice, and ministers.
“The region has produced two chief justices, we have many senior government officials, it has ever produced the Vice-President, and you remember that people who strongly fought for this country during colonial rule like Levi Mumba and Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa II were all from here,” he said.
However, Freedom Party leader Khumbo Kachali, who is also former State vice-president said it was unfortunate that the DPP leadership has started talking about the party even before its launch.
PP administrative secretary Joseph Chikwemba urged the DPP to deal with its problems and leave the orange party alone.
Aford president Enock Chihana could not be reached on his mobile phone for comment, whereas MCP deputy secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka said Jeffrey is disillusioned.
